For we are
God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared
in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 NIV
You are watching
the end of a movie and a character steps forward. Up to this point he has offered very little
to help alleviate the crisis of impending doom of the ship. He has not been smart enough, strong enough,
good looking enough, and doesn’t possess a lot of charisma, although he seems
likeable. But at this moment he steps
forward, because he possesses something no one else on the ship has…he is small
enough to fit through the hole. Then he
can repair the part that is broken that no one else can reach. The movie director has kept him in the background
throughout the movie so that his specialty can shine for this one moment. We in the audience cheer and applaud. Why?
Because we can all relate that we have some talent yet to be experienced
by the rest of the world.
Paul is telling
us that we are specially made for doing good deeds. God created us physically unique. I have identical twin boys who look so much
the same that we have to remember which position they were in standing for a
picture. Yet, they are still
different. Just ask their wives, no way
they can trick them. The point is that
God made you unique…warts and all.
Maybe you like
numbers and care nothing about sports and athletics…we need you. Maybe you like cooking and serving others…we
need you. Maybe you like to organize
people for accomplishing task…we need you.
Maybe you love praying for people, but you don’t like crowds…we need
your prayers.
Handiwork or
masterpiece in some translations indicates that details were added to make it
unique. We look at famous works of art
trying to understand how and what the artist wanted to communicate. The painting is a reflection of the
creativity of the artist. So also, you
and I were made in God’s image. We
reflect the diversity of God’s love.
This creativity
is not just limited to our physical features, we were created in Christ
Jesus. Just as there is a uniqueness
about us physically, God has also made us spiritually to “fit” into the body of
Christ. We serve a function in the body
that is important. Please don’t ever belittle
how God desires for you to serve in the body.
When you don’t perform your part, in some way the rest of the body
suffers. When we are sick the doctor
checks our blood. He is looking for
something missing, which makes the blood out of balance. That missing part can make the whole-body
sick or function poorly. You are needed.
It is even
possible that God’s purpose for you has yet to be fully discovered. There is a “hole” coming that only you can
fill. The important thing is not to quit
or leave the scene too early. When that
moment comes for you to stand in the gap for others…be there!
Prayer request. Possibly
like many of you, our family has been plagued with the flu virus. Melody is on her 3rd round this
month, with the latest being identified as flu-B. Please pray for her cough to subside and
healing to come. Katy was diagnosed
yesterday with the flu. Pam is dealing
with a cough and had the flu earlier this month. Thanks for the prayers
