What does rest look like for you?

30 The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.
Jesus had sent the disciples out to do ministry.  They taught and performed miracles all while traveling by foot.  When they returned they we excited, but also tired.  Jesus told them it was time to leave the crowds of people and rest.

Rest was intentional.  Jesus told them to stop doing “ministry”, leave the area and go away for privacy.  After intensive ministry it is a good practice to schedule down time.  I had one friend that scheduled a family day just before and just after a mission trip.  He was alone with his family.

Rest was in a specific place. From Bible Hub we find this meaning for a desolate place.  2048 érēmos – properly, an uncultivated, unpopulated place; a desolate (deserted) area; (figuratively) a barren, solitary place that also provides needed quiet (freedom from disturbance).
In Scripture, a "desert" (2048 /érēmos) is ironically also where God richly grants His presence and provision for those seeking Him.  If you feel like you are in a desert, God may have led you there to find him and receive rest.  Look for him and enjoy him.

Rest is for a season of time.  This type of resting could be a few hours in the afternoon after intense counseling or strategizing.  Trust that the time set aside is the right length of time, don’t cut it short.  Resist jumping back in too quickly.  This is a time for your mind to slow down a little so that you can listen again.  If you are a ministry leader, then set the example for rest.  Jesus led is disciples by showing them the rhythm of ministry.

Rest includes a good meal.  Jesus said they were so busy they did not even have the opportunity to eat.  Interesting that right after their season of rest, they feed the 5000 in the same desolate place.  Many people enjoy dining at fun restaurants while on vacation.  Someone has said that the smell of food can bring back pleasant memories of great family times or conversations with friends.  Don’t rush meal times.  Meaningful conversation can be shared over that meal that would never take place in another setting.  See someone who needs rest….invite them out to eat.

Father, you lead us beside the still waters and restore our soul.  Help us to live in the rhythm of ministry and life that you desire for us.  Give us wisdom and strength to pull away to regain insight.  Help us to enjoy breathing, slow and meaningful.  Thank you for rest.  In Jesus Name, Amen.
